imraaaaaaaaaaaaaan

He’s only talking about his own ‘chocolatey’ label. Imran’s debut film Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na, which was a huge success, was a candy floss romance, albeit with some freshness and extra flavour, but c’mon it was a rom-com, after all. And Imran was touted as the hottest new chocolate-boy. Along with Ranbir Kapoor, of course. Recently, when ZOOM was doing a special interview with this dashing Khan, for Luck, he confessed in so many words that he didn’t particularly fancy the ‘chocolate-boy’ image. In fact he said that he hates the word ‘chocolate-boy’. Uh-huh...this is what we don’t get. If the image works wonders for him (and wins him so many fans, even if they’re mostly women), what’s the problem, yaar? Remember Mamu (Aamir Khan) started his career’s first hit with a lover-boy image in QSQT. Well, so hold on dude, there’s still time to turn into the angry young man. Wotsay, Mamu? Catch the Imran Khan Luck special on ZOOM this week!

bharathi airtel

Bharti Airtel on Thursday reported a 24-per cent rise in its net profit at Rs. 2,517 crore in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal. The company also said its merger talks with South Africa’s MTN were still continuing.
Consolidated revenues for the quarter grew by 17.2 per cent year-on-year to Rs. 9,942 crore as per U.S. accounting standards. The telecom company made a foreign exchange gain of Rs. 250 crore in the quarter against a loss of Rs. 168 crore a year ago. Stating that growth in rural customer numbers and foreign currency gains helped the company improve performance, Bharti Airtel CEO and Joint Managing Director Manoj Kohli pointed out that competition led to a drop in key parameters such as average revenue per user and minutes of usage. Airtel added 85.5 lakh customers, its highest-ever for any quarter to date on a net basis.
Referring to the ongoing talks between Bharti and MTN, Bharti Enterprises Deputy Group CEO and Managing Director Akhil Gupta said talks were going on between the companies to form a global business combination. Notably, Bharti Airtel and MTN had revived talks over the $23 billion merger in May.

pro-gay judge executed

A Supreme Court advocate has raised the issue of "judicial impropriety" on the part of Justice S Murlidhar, who had sat on the Bench that delivered the path-breaking judgement in the 'gay sex' case. In two separate letters written to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court Justice A P Shah and Members of Parliament, advocate Janak Raj Jai contended that Justice Murlidhar had himself filed a writ petition in 1994 as a lawyer in the High Court seeking quashing of Section 377 of the IPC. When contacted, Justice Murlidhar's Secretary said the judge was aware of the letter (of the advocate) but had no comments to make. Jai said Justice Murlidhar had appeared as intervenor in the original writ petition on behalf of an organisation "AIDS Bedhav Virodhi Andolan." "Propriety demands that a judge who had been an advocate in a similar case, should not have heard the present petition (Naz Foundation) challenging the vires of Section 377 IPC," the letter, written by Jai to the Chief Justice three days before the judgement was delivered, stated. In his letter, Jai had sought deferring of the judgement and pleaded that the matter be posted before another Bench.

raiway officials meet

Faced with increasing criticism about lack of passenger amenities, Northern Railways has asked senior officials to conduct surprise checks and periodic inspections of stations and trains. "The aim is to bring about a visible change in about a month's time", officials said. Delhi Division, which falls under the zone, has deputed about 154 gazetted officers to carry out the checks and report back to the departments concerned. "The officers include 33 deputy heads of departments," a senior official of the division said. He said that even the DRM would be involved in the exercise and carry out surprise inspections to ensure that the directives issued by the officers are actually being carried out. He will be given a copy of the inspection report by the inspecting officials. The General Manager of Northern Railways recently held a video conference with DRMs under the zone and asked them to ensure that passenger amenities are spruced up. Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has put passenger amenities on top of her agenda and made a series of policy announcements in this regard in her budget speech.MORE PTI SGI Delhi Division has also instructed officers to pick a train of their choice on random basis and inspect all details onboard. "We want to ensure that every station and train, both big and small is inspected so that there is no discrimination," the official said. Delhi Division has three stations which fall in category A1, about 14 in category A, 11 in category B, 41 in category D and about 85 in category E. The anti-fraud squad of Northern Railway had also recently stepped up its drive against illegal hawkers at platforms and travel agents

tiger's meeting

Three years after the National Tiger Conservation Authority proposed setting up steering committees in states to oversee conservation efforts for the big cat, the Uttar Pradesh government has constituted the panel which is headed by Chief Minister Mayawati. "The UP government has already constituted the Steering Committee," an NTCA official said and hoped the step would ensure better management of the endangered species in its Dudhwa Tiger reserve. The NTCA has already given in-principle approval to the state government to declare Pilibhit forests having good number of striped cats as a tiger reserve.Apart from the chief minister as the committee's chairman, the forest minister will be vice-chairman and the principal secretaries of the Forests departments, Tribal Welfare and Social Welfare departments will be members as stipulated under the Wildlife Protection Act.Uttar Pradesh is the sixth state which has constituted the steering committee after Andhra Pradesh, Arunanchal, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. Describing it as a "landmark event", the US has said the end-user monitoring (EUM) arrangement agreed during Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit has brought India into the nuclear non-proliferation mainstream. "It's a very significant agreement," State Department Spokesman Robert Wood told reporters Tuesday when asked to explain how the EUM for high-tech defence equipment and technology would work. "We're very proud and we believe that this agreement between the US and India is important in our overall global non-proliferation efforts, and we believe that this agreement has brought India into the nuclear non-proliferation mainstream." "And so it's a landmark event," Wood said. "What end-user means is basically making sure that the material, once it's delivered, it does not go to any other party, unless there is some sort of agreement by the United States. I mean that's, in essence, what end-user means." Asked how the US would verify the end user and whether it would entail any visits to Indian military bases, the spokesman declined to get into the details. "Those types of issues will be worked out between the two sides and in consultation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and other players. But I'm not an expert in the agreement, so I can't get into all of the details." Asked to comment on the strong political reaction to the EUM in India with critics calling it a sellout to the US, Wood said: "India made a conscious decision to sign this agreement. It's in - India has said it's in its best interests. "We certainly think it's in the interest of the United States. But again, we think it's an overall good agreement. And we will need to implement the agreement, and those activities are already underway."

kasb's partial confession

The 26/11 special court on Thursday will deliver its judgement on whether to accept lone surviving terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab’s partial confession of his involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks. Kasab had surprised all with his confessions, over the last three days, detailing his role in carrying out the November 26, 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. He has also asked the Special Judge ML Tahilyani to stop the trial and announce the verdict. While rejecting fears that he was confessing under pressure, Kasab had went to the extent of asking to be hanged if need be and that he was not admitting to his guilt to get a lesser sentence. If the judge accepts Kasab's guilty plea, it could be the end of what could otherwise have been a lengthy trial. The prosecution led by Special Public Prosecutor Ujwal Nikam has been claiming that Kasab was not revealing the entire truth and that his confession is a ploy to seek leniency in punishment and hide facts about the bigger conspiracy behind the attacks. “He has 86 charges against him, but he has only admitted to the CST incident. He is trying to take minimum responsibility,” Nikam told the court yesterday. Nikam further stated that it seems Kasab was also trying to shield his LeT handlers based in Pakistan from investigations. “Kasab is trying to shift the responsibility onto his accomplice Abu Ismail, who is dead. Kasab is playing a smart game,” Nikam said. He wants the court to put the admission of guilt on record, so that it can be “acted upon” later, but not to accept it now with all the contradictions it contains. “The omissions are of a serious nature... the statement should be taken on record and the trial should proceed.” Nikam said the statement, nevertheless, puts the prosecution in a better position to complete the case within a month. “We aim at concluding the case in a month. The defence doesn’t have much to argue now. But we don’t take Kasab’s claims at face value,” said Nikam. On the other hand, defence lawyer Abbas Kazmi has claimed that his client was being tortured and that he made the confession on Monday (July 20) under pressure. However, his claim fell flat when Kasab made it clear that he wasn’t under any pressure. Until now, over 133 witnesses have been examined in the different cases of the 26/11 attacks filed against Kasab. Kasab has been charged with murder, conspiracy and waging war against India along with other crimes. Kasab is the only attacker captured alive by police and is currently in custody. He was captured on CCTV during his attacks at the CST along with another terrorist, Ismail Khan. The Government of Pakistan initially denied that Kasab was from Pakistan, but in January 2009, it officially accepted that he was a Pakistani citizen.

SWINE FLU

New influenza A (H1N1) is reassorted virus which originated in Mexico and has spread across the world causing a pandemic. This influenza pandemic, as per WHO estimates ,may affect upto 1/3 of the world population, in view of lack of immunity human beings carry against this virus.
The picture of the epidemic is still evolving at global as well as national level which is the biggest testimonial to strengthen and consolidate our preparedness and response measures in both health as well as non-health sectors. All government agencies with the help of the NDMA( national disaster management authority) have acted promptly, so far ,to contain the magnitude of the problem.

Why raindrops come in many sizes

Researchers in France have explained why the drops are an array of so many different sizes.
Reporting in the journal Nature Physics, the team described how the drop deformed and burst as it fell. Its fragments matched the size and distribution of drops in natural rain. Scientists previously believed that the drops collided with each other as they descended, and that these interactions produced a variety of drop sizes. But the lead author of this study, Emmanuel Villermaux from Aix-Marseille University, explained that there were always "shortcomings" in this idea.

Objectiviy and Journalism

Objectivity and journalism are two words that rarely gotogether now a days. Objectivity is a word that is hard to define, or rather it is an easy word that can be moulded according to each ones interest. Objectivity on the same time complex and simple.
When a journalist reports an incident 1st he sees it through his own eyes, interprets it with his own ideals and then he present it in a way that is objective to his preceptions (If he intends to presnt ojectively). Obviously the news is objective in a sense that is objective to the (only) presenter. You may agree that, this is not what is called objective. Our precemption about objectivity is slightly diffrent from the presenter. So, in a true sense ojectivity is uttopian. All the gwa gwa about objectivity is absurd.
Now the question arises. If there is nothing called objectivity, why labour for providing the reders the truth. The truth is that thereis nothing called perfect.
What we all working for is that un acheivable perfection, that is what we can work for, and that is what man kind had been working for since time immemorial. That had moved the man kind from the jungles to the modern world. Since perfect is uttopian, there is always scope for improvement. So there is no time for stopping. The case is same with Ojectivity. Try to be more objective each time

'Kasab's confession to help Pak nail down 26/11 suspects'

The confession by Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist captured for the Mumbai attacks, will help Pakistani authorities to "nail down" his collaborators and handlers, including LeT operations chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi currently undergoing trial in connection with 26/11 strikes.
The surprising confession yesterday in a special court in Mumbai had "dashed all hopes of the under-trial LeT militants in Pakistan who had been in high spirits following" Kasab's earlier statement in which he had said he was not guilty, sources in the interior ministry told The News daily. Kasab's decision to give details of the conspiracy behind the Mumbai attacks would make it easy for Pakistani authorities to "nail down" the five LeT operatives undergoing trial in an anti-terrorism court in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, the sources said.

The 10-year-old who helped Apollo 11, 40 years later

On July 23, 1969, as Apollo 11 hurtled back towards Earth, there was a problem -- a problem only a kid could solve.

At age 10, Greg Force reaches his arm into a tiny hole to fix an antenna crucial to Apollo 11.
It sounds like something out of a movie, but that's what it came down to as Apollo 11 sped back towards Earth after landing on the moon in 1969.
It was around 10:00 at night on July 23, and 10-year-old Greg Force was at home with his mom and three brothers. His father, Charles Force, was at work. Charles Force was the director of the NASA tracking station in Guam, where the family was living.
The Guam tracking station was to play a critical role in the return of Apollo 11 to Earth. A powerful antenna there connected NASA communications with Apollo 11, and the antenna was the only way for NASA to make its last communications with the astronauts before splashdown. But at the last minute on that night, a bearing in the antenna failed, rendering it nearly useless.
To properly replace the bearing would have required dismantling the entire antenna, and there was simply no time. So Charles Force thought of a creative solution: If he could get more grease around the failed bearing, it would probably be fine. The only problem was, nobody at the station had an arm small enough to actually reach in through the two-and-a-half inch opening and pack grease around the bearing.
And that's when Greg was called in to save the day. Charles Force sent someone out to his home to pick up Greg. Once at the tracking station, Greg reached into the tiny hole and packed grease around the failed bearing. It worked, and the station was able to successfully complete its communications role in the mission. Apollo 11 splashed down safely the next day.
At the time, Greg didn't think what he was doing was a big deal, and 40 years later, he's still modest about his role in the mission.
"That's all I did, was put my hand in and put grease on it," he says. If he hadn't been there, NASA would not have been able to make its last communications with the mission before splashdown, but Greg says "it wasn't life or death, [from] my understanding."
"My dad explained to me why it was important," he says, "but it kind of caught me by surprise afterwards, all the attention."
That attention came from the media and even the astronauts themselves. Greg's small but important part in Apollo 11 was a story told by news outlets around the world. He even got a nice thank-you note from Neil Armstrong, whom he met when Armstrong went on a tour of NASA stations with the other astronauts to thank the staff after the mission. "To Greg," reads the note, which Armstrong wrote on a newspaper clipping of Greg's story, "with thanks for your help on Apollo 11. Neil Armstrong."
Perhaps not surprisingly, like many other kids who grew up during the Apollo era, Greg dreamed of becoming an astronaut. He says he remembers visiting his dad's office to listen to astronauts communicating with NASA officials on the ground.
"We could sit and listen to the actual communication with the astronauts as it was happening, and it was hard to understand, but I loved to do that," he says. "On Guam we didn't have good television coverage, so I think I listened to the [moon] landing on the radio. To me it was a huge thing."
Greg pursued his dreams of space exploration all the way through college, where he majored in physics. Unfortunately, he was unable to pass the vision test for the space program because of his colorblindness, but even that couldn't squelch his interest. Greg went on to get his pilot's license, and even though his career now as a gymnastics school owner isn't exactly space-related, he says that "ever since then, I've followed the space program."
And as a lover of space exploration, Greg hopes to see more missions to the moon.
"I think it would be an important step as far as going further, like to Mars," he says. "I would love to see us go back to the moon."
But for now, on the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, he can remember the small but crucial role he played in bringing Apollo 11 home safely.
"It kind of caught me by surprise," he says, "but I'm real proud to have been even a little tiny part of it.

Breastfeeding may not protect babies, mothers told

Michael Kramer, a professor of paediatrics who has advised the World Health Organisation and Unicef, said that much of the evidence used to persuade mothers to breastfeed was out of date.
He said evidence that breastfeeding protects against obesity was flawed. He told the Times: The evidence it protects against allergies and asthma is also weak. And there is very little evidence that it reduces the risk of leukaemia, lymphoma, bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, heart disease and blood pressure.

Eagle Wing

The spacecraft, part of the US space agency's Constellation programme, is the vehicle that Nasa hopes will carry man to the surface of the Moon by 2020. Despite Mr Connolly's fantasies about its design, prototypes of the craft bear a striking resemblance to the Eagle lander which carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface 40 years ago. "That was an ugly, spidery spacecraft," he says. "But the Apollo engineers got a lot of things right." Like the Eagle, Altair will be delivered into orbit by a heavy-lift rocket (the Ares V, currently under development) and then ferried on towards the Moon by a command module. And like its predecessor it is a two-stage vehicle: a descent and an ascent stage.

Astronautz mossion

Two of the astronauts who took part in the first Moon landing 40 years ago have called for renewed efforts to send a manned mission to Mars.At a rare public reunion of the Apollo 11 crew, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins said Mars instead of the Moon should be the focus of exploration. Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, said the race to get to the Moon had been the ultimate peaceful contest. He said it was an "exceptional national investment" for the US and ex-USSR. The trio spoke at an event at Washington DC's National Air and Space Museum to mark the 40th anniversary of their mission.
