Thomas Stearns Eliot

Thomas Stearns Eliot(26 September 1888–4 January 1965), was a poet, playwright and literary critic. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Among his most famous writings are the poems The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, The Hollow Men, Ash Wednesday and Four Quartets; the plays Murder in the Cathedral and The Cocktail Party; and the essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent".
Eliot was born in the United States, moved to the United Kingdom in 1914 (at age 25), and became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39. Of his nationality and its role in his work, Eliot said: "[My poetry] wouldn't be what it is if I'd been born in England, and it wouldn't be what it is if I'd stayed in America. It's a combination of things. But in its sources, in its emotional springs, it comes from America."

King of literature is the ‘Sweet Swan of Avon’, William Shakespeare (April 1564 - 23 April 1616), about whom Ben Jonson says, “He was not of an age, but for all time!”Shakespeare and literature seem to be synonymous! It is strange how literature, even now, pays homage to that man of average education, who is said to have held horses of royal gentry outside the theatre. The playwright wrote plays mainly for performances and never thought that his works will rule generation-after-generation – a fact evident from the unavailability of his original manuscripts. Shakespeare is said to have a vocabulary of over 29,000 words (The average American`s vocabulary is around 10,000 words).Little is known about the bard’s personal life, but too much is said. The poet (eighteen at the time of marriage) was unhappily married to Anne Hathaway (twenty-six), abandoned his family, and left Stratford-on-Avon to earn his living. He joined a traveling company of actors and went to London. Another story goes that he fled his birthplace to avoid arrest after stealing Sir Thomas Lacy`s deer. But there is little or no proof for any of these suppositions. However, contemporary records establish the facts on his baptism, marriage, parentage and his life after the year 1594King of literature is the ‘Sweet Swan of Avon’, William Shakespeare (April 1564 - 23 April 1616), about whom Ben Jonson says, “He was not of an age, but for all time!”Shakespeare and literature seem to be synonymous! Low-cost malaria drugs

Anti malaria drugs, more powerful than previous versions, will be put within reach of millions of people in Africa and Asia as part of an initiative launched by the UN-backed fund that fights major epidemics.
Malaria is a potentially deadly disease that is transmitted through mosquito bites and kills more than 2,ooo children every day.Children make up nearly 90 percent of the nearly one million people who die from malaria every year, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. The new drugs, known as "artemisinin combination therapies" or ACTs, are currently 10-40 times more expensive than the old ones which have lost their effectiveness because the malaria parasite has developed resistence to them.
Malaria affects 300-500 million people worldwide, leading to more than a million deaths. It is caused by the Plasmodium parasite which needs both humans and female Anopheles mosquitoes to propagate itself.

Eco- friendly plastic

The use of cheap plastic bags, almost everywhere on all occasions, has created enough nuisance, as far as the environment is concerned. Most of these plastic bags are biodegradable, and hence, not liked by friends of the environment. But now there is hope for eco-friendly plastic. Due to advanced technology, some of the abundant corn in USA is already being converted into environmental friendly plastic and fibres, for use in products ranging from mattress pads and golf shirts to soda cups and minidisk wrappers. Corn plastics are being developed by Cargill Dow LLC at its plant outside Blair. First of all, refined corn sugar is converted into a substance called Polylactide. The sugar is fermented and distilled to extract carbon. It may be noted that carbon is the basic ingredient of commercial plastic. It takes about a month for plastic bags made from corn to degrade in a compost. On the other hand an oil based plastic bag could take centuries to decompose. It is true that today, biodegradable corn plastics are more expensive than traditional plastics. However, it becomes very useful and practical, this new eco-friendly industry will also become cheaper.
