THE NIGHTINGALE OF CARNATIC MUSIC


Madhuri Shanmukhavadivu Subhalakshmi(M S Subhalakshmi) was born in Madurai on 16th september 1916.Her father was a lawyer and mother was a veena player.She is affetionately called 'Kunja'.Her mind was full of music.She hear nadaswarams,a few conerts even folk from street beggars.She has a routine of listening toTamburu.Subhalakshmi acted in four films.Meera is her last film.It made her a national icon.She sung bhajans in 10 languages.Subbulakshmi died on December 11, 2004 after a brief illness, due to complications relating to pneumonia and cardiac irregularities.

She received a number of awards.

Indian Top civilian Honour,The Bharat Ratna (1998),Padma Bhushan(1954),TheRamonMagsasyAward91974),Padmavibhooshan(1975)and Kaalias Sanman(1988)
